Catalonia is one of the regions in Spain that have managed to keep traditions and customs alive through the years. The traditions form a part of the daily lives of the locals and tourists find most of them quite interesting and they get to Barcelona in time to witness the traditions. The traditions are held in different seasons and at different times making it important for tourists to have information right to ensure they do not miss out on the traditions they are most interested in.

Saint George: this is a tradition that entails the celebration of Saint George, Catalonia patron saint. It is held every 23rd day of April and the Catalans come out in large numbers to make the celebration a reality. They offer books and roses and you will therefore find the streets within Barcelona full of book stands.

Saint John’s Eve: this is a summer solstice that is celebrated every 23rd day of June where the Catalans light huge bonfires, use fireworks and firecrackers and eat traditional food that is the Sant Joan coca, a kind of a pastry. The celebrations are quite interesting and attract tourists who find themselves in Barcelona during the celebration period.

Sardanas: it is a traditional dance in Catalan and people will normally meet at the front part of the cathedral on selected Sundays to take part in the dance. This is a great way of forgetting the daily hustles and the participants come out in large numbers to dance the day away.

Castellers: these are human towers that are quite high with some going as high as 9 floors. This is a tradition that originated from Tarragona but the locals here still practice the formation of the towers especially during popular festivals within Barcelona. You will find the human towers especially when Merce is celebrated.

La Merce: this festival is dedicated to patron saint of Barcelona and is normally held every 24th day of September location villa piscine. The day actually goes by the La Merce name since it is a tradition that is recognized. The festival organizes different activities to suit different ages and tastes of the locals. You will be amazed by the fire breathing dragons during the celebrations and you can never miss out on the pyrotechnical show that involves music and fireworks. You will be lucky to be in Barcelona during this celebration.
